José María San Feliu Lozano, founder of IATS and pioneer of Spanish aquaculture, passed away.

On May 13, 2024 we mourn the loss of José María San Feliu Lozano, colleague, pioneer and inspirer in Marine Aquaculture research. J.M. San Feliu took over the direction of the Grao de Castellón Laboratory in 1972, then belonging to the Institute of Fisheries Research of the CSIC, significantly promoting marine aquaculture in the CSIC. He collaborated intensively in the design of the project for the construction of the IATS at its current location, inaugurated in 1979, which received recognition from the FAO for its infrastructure model. Under his direction, until 1983, the institute diversified its cultures, including species such as sea bass, sea bream, sole, mollusks and artemia. He retired in 1998.
