19 Feb We celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
Every February 11th, we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a date proclaimed by the UN in 2015 to recognize the fundamental contribution of women researchers in science and technology. In the field of aquaculture, female presence is essential to drive sustainable development and innovation in the sector.
Women in Science and Aquaculture
Within the framework of the ThinkInAzul Program of the Valencian Community, which promotes new challenges in marine research and addresses the challenges of the Blue Economy, female scientists play a crucial role in advancing and improving Mediterranean aquaculture. However, the gender gap in science remains a challenge. Globally, only 29.3% of researchers are women, and although women represent 37% of the staff at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), this percentage drops to 26% in higher-ranking positions.
Women researchers in aquaculture have made significant advances in areas such as genetic improvement of species, sustainability of production systems, and animal welfare. Their work is fundamental in ensuring food security and preserving aquatic ecosystems.
In the ThinkInAzul Program of the Valencian Community, scientists like Ariadna Sitjà and Esther Sendra lead innovative studies, driving advances in sustainable production and resilience of Mediterranean aquaculture species. Ariadna, coordinator of Work Package 4, focuses on disease prevention in fish, while Esther, leading Work Package 5, researches the improvement of aquaculture feed and sustainable products. Their efforts are vital in strengthening the resilience and sustainability of the sector.
The path to gender equality in science requires joint efforts. Key initiatives such as mentorship programs and scholarships specifically for women in marine sciences and aquaculture are fundamental to strengthening their presence in research. It is also essential to implement strategies to reduce the gender gap in hiring and promotion within research centers. Additionally, science outreach activities play a crucial role in inspiring girls and young women to pursue STEM careers, promoting a more inclusive and equitable future in science.
