The CSIC Celebrates Its 85th Anniversary

Last Tuesday, December 17, the CSIC celebrated its 85th anniversary with an event attended by the Minister of Science, Innovation, and Universities, Diana Morant; the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Universities, Juan Cruz Cigudosa; the Secretary General for Research, Eva Ortega Paíno; and the President of the CSIC, Eloísa del Pino. During the ceremony, the Extraordinary Medal of Scientific Merit of the CSIC was awarded to Spanish biophysicist Eva Nogales for her groundbreaking work in the field of macromolecular function visualization.

The CSIC, affiliated with the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities, is the largest public research institution in Spain and the third largest in Europe. It is a member of the G6, a network that brings together six major European multidisciplinary organizations, including the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren, the Leibniz-Gemeinschaft, and the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft.

The Council, with its 124 centers and institutes and more than 15,000 employees, covers all scientific disciplines and is present in all autonomous communities, as well as in Rome, Brussels, and the Antarctic base. The research carried out by the CSIC is transferred to public administrations and civil society, thus helping to address numerous contemporary challenges related to ecological transition, resource scarcity, public health assurance, digitalization, social inclusion, employment, and the quality of democracy, all aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The CSIC also contributes to ensuring the strategic autonomy of both Spain and the European Union, fostering the production of excellent science and knowledge in these regions and establishing alliances with other European countries and the rest of the world.
