UPV4 Group

Polytechnic University of Valencia

Two University Professors, 3 postdoctoral researchers, and 6 predoctoral researchers are currently developing the research lines of the Aquaculture and Biodiversity Group from the Polytechnic University of Valencia on fish reproduction, which includes aspects related to aquaculture and species conservation.

Our background includes studies on fish reproductive physiology, particularly on the endocrine control of gametogenesis, and the design and evaluation of methods for inducing sexual maturation, typically using the European eel as an experimental model.

Another priority area of our work is spermatology, which includes the study of the physiological processes responsible for activating sperm motility and the development of techniques for evaluating sperm quality and cryopreservation, as a method for conserving genetic resources, both for species of aquaculture interest and for species with conservation challenges.

In recent years, we have developed projects focused on the reproduction of elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) and small freshwater species from the Iberian Peninsula.

At ThinkInAzul, we study the physiological mechanisms underlying the effects of temperature and pH on fish sperm quality, sperm motility in different marine species, and the cryopreservation of their genetic resources.
