This team, established as such in 1984, owes its origin and current diversity in lines of research to the initial studies focused on the biology and use in aquaculture of the branchiopod crustacean. Artemia. The use of nauplii of Artemia as live prey in marine larviculture, and research on the biodiversity and biogeography of species in the genus at regional and global scales, greatly influenced the evolution of the team's research lines during its first 25 years of existence. Without abandoning these topics, over the last 10 years, the group has expanded with new lines of research, both in basic and applied aspects, which have been projected with an innovative vision in the field of diverse scientific disciplines such as biochemistry and lipid metabolism of organisms under cultivation, and in aquatic ecosystems, nutrigenomics, aquatic ecotoxicology, etc.
The team consists of researchers Juan Carlos Navarro (Coordinator), Francisco Hontoria, Inmaculada Varó, and Óscar Monroig, five doctoral students, and four support technicians. The group receives regular funding from projects under competitive programs from the State Research Agency, EU Framework Programs, the Research Council of Norway, the Generalitat Valenciana, and others.
