WP3 - Nutrition and Wellness (NUBE)

WP3 (CLOUD), focused on nutrition and welfare, is articulated around 3 generic objectives. The first one is related to the improvement of knowledge on the welfare of aquaculture crops through the use of new welfare tools and indicators, within a context of global change. The second objective focuses on improving the nutrition and feeding of farmed animals, through the use of new feed formulations based on mixtures of alternative raw materials and dietary supplements validated throughout the production cycle, with zootechnical and behavioral data and new molecular biology and microbiota monitoring tools. Finally, the proposal contemplates generating new ingredients for aquaculture feeds from the valorization of fishery by-products and other products and by-products of vegetable or animal origin with the aim of obtaining compounds beneficial to the health and nutrition of farmed species.

Objectives

Objective 3.1

Improving knowledge on crop welfare through the use of new tools and indicators in a context of global change.

  • Action 2.11: Improving knowledge on the welfare of cultured fish and developing systems to continuously and reliably monitor (i) new welfare indicators under normal culture conditions and during the slaughter process (where appropriate) and (ii) developing strategies to improve feed intake and utilisation, growth, reproduction and health status (susceptibility to disease) of cultured fish.

Objective 3.2

Improve nutrition and feeding of farmed animals through the use of new feed formulations based on alternative raw material mixtures and dietary supplements validated throughout the production cycle with zootechnical, behavioural data and new molecular biology and microbiota monitoring tools.

  • Action 2.12: Improvement of fish nutrition and feeding through the use of new feed formulations based on mixtures of alternative raw materials (insect proteins, polychaetes, algae extracts, yeasts, bacterial proteins, etc.) and dietary supplements (probiotics, prebiotics, symbiotics, probiotics), validated throughout the production cycle with zootechnical and behavioural data (intake, physical activity, space occupation, etc.) and new molecular biology tools and monitoring of the microbiota as a marker of the general state of the fish.
  • Task 3.2.2: Development of sustainable feeds for shrimp.
  • Task 3.2.4: Characterization of the palliative effects of dietary probiotic inclusion on chronic stress and animal welfare in Mediterranean aquaculture species (gilthead sea bream, European seabass, meagre, yellowtail).

Objective 3.3

To generate new ingredients for aquaculture feeds from the valorisation of fishery discards and other products and by-products of plant or animal origin in order to obtain compounds of interest for the health and nutrition of farmed species.

  • Action 2.13: Generation of new ingredients for aquaculture feed from the valorisation of fishery discards and other by-products of plant or animal origin in order to obtain compounds of interest for the health and nutrition of farmed species through the application of biotechnological tools.
